Help me identify this portlight, and replace the gasket
Hi Cruisers. I am struggling to stop a leak in the portlight shown in the pictures. I believe it is original to my 1994 boat, but there are no manufacturing marks of any kind. I can't find similar hinges / latches to find the manufacturer. The gasket that seals the portlight is cracked at the bottom. Someone tried to fix with silicon, but it didn't work and has been leaking I would guess for years. You can see the repair in the middle of the bottom of the seal. There are 5 other similar portlights, so if I would much rather fix the gasket than replace.
Does anyone know what type of portlight this is, so I can get the correct gasket?
If not, does anyone know how to use generic gaskets to fix? The gasket seems to be sort of "U" shaped with the bottom of the U sealing against the glass.

Re: Help me identify this portlight, and replace the gasket
This portlight reminds me of those made by Bomar in the early 90's (Google the Bomar 2000 series to see the current models). We have similar extruded aluminum ports that leak on our 1990 Tartan. We have contacted the company in the past to inquire about parts for these; Bomar will respond if you send them a photo and size of what you need. Unfortunately, in our case the Bomar ports were custom made for the manufacturer and we have been unable to get any replacement bits. And because of the odd size - any new ports would need to be custom made (only out of stainless this time!)... i.e., more boat bucks needed.

It looks like a Lewmar to me. Measure it and go to Defender Marine for gasket prices and other replacement parts. There are two types, current models that go back to the 90's I think and what they call the old series. They have replacement parts for both and you should not have a problem getting the part...gaskets if I remember are around 20+ bucks each.

Re: Help me identify this portlight, and replace the gasket
My first thought was Lewmar as well. Now I'm not so sure.
Take a look at this: https://www.lewmar.com/node/14691
The frame looks like an Atlantic port but the latches are wrong.
Maybe an old Standard?

Spot on with the link: It's the old standard

I think you guys are right with the old standard. The oval shaped doesn’t appear to be standard so now I can’t find a factory gasket. Is it possible to use the rectangle shape? Any reliable DIY fixes?

Clean surfaces, use Aviation Form-a-gasket.

I'm not sure the name of the manufacturer but the gasket is easy to replace. I recently did my port lights with rubber bought from a chandlers in Corfu. Clean the old gasket off and stick the new stuff with a suitable contact adhesive QED.

Before you give up, contact Lewmar. Their website is a pain in the butt and often if you ask them, they have something you can't find on the website. I see they have gaskets for the newer Standard ports. It wouldn't surprise me if they are the same as for the older Standard.

Re: Help me identify this portlight, and replace the gasket
I replaced the plastic/what ever to make the portlights clear. I took the glass item to a glass company and they cut a replacement. I then used a sealant to re-bed the item. I replaced 6. Easy...Probably cheaper than the manufactuer.

Re: Help me identify this portlight, and replace the gasket
Lewmar still make oval portlights. That looks like an old style 7RE or 1RE.
Seals are different for old and new styles, or at least they are listed differently.
Lewmar are quite helpful, if you can get hold of someone.
If you strike out, Catalina Direct does a "cut to length" kit.
Often leaks are the 'o' rings on the latches and hinges. Are you sure it's the actual seal?
Good Luck.

Re: Help me identify this portlight, and replace the gasket
I replaced all gaskets in our bronze portlights a few years ago. We replaced the glass with smoke lexan and bought about 60 feet of red silicon gasket material of the right shape and cut it to fit. Our boat was built in 1979 and we have 13 heavy bronze portlights.

Re: Help me identify this portlight, and replace the gasket
It took a search of my older archives.
The supplier who sold us the gasket material was SASindustries dot com and they were as professional and helpful as any could be.

Thanks KP. How did you connect the two ends of the gasket where they joined? That is where mine are currently leaking as the joint is simple silicon and not working...
