Heat exchaner maintenance

I was going to flush my cooling system but its turned into a full rebuild . I found a bit of play in my fresh water pump bearing & my exhaust elbow was just about stuffed as well. So pulled everything off the 4LH-DTE and set about cleaning & replacing all the o- rings gaskets ,water pump, exhaust elbow & clean the turbo.
Now about to reassembel with fresh paint. Looks like a new engine.

Re: Heat exchaner maintenance

In plate type heat exchangers, the stack of plates is removed to expose the surface. The plate surface is then cleaned with brush or by the methods suggested by the manufacturer. (Sharp tools should be avoided). Cleaning should be done in such a way that it does not damage the plate seals. However, if a replacement of the seal is necessary, it must be done before putting the plates back.

Re: Heat exchaner maintenance

This is not a plate heat exchanger it's a copper brass tube type. You remove the core & soak in a weak solution of hydrochloric acid until all the lime scale & calcium is removed. Then after rinsing rebuild the exchanger using new o- rings & gaskets . Now all back together & working great with no leaks & few degrees cooler.

Re: Heat exchaner maintenance

Nice job. Just got thru with that job but had a problem with the it overheating afterward. Flushed and replaced the coolant and all was fine.
