headliner glue

My boat (Moody M46) has a foam backed headliner that was glued in place. Over the years the foam tends to disintegrate, resulting in considerable sag of the headliner. This is a fairly common Moody problem, and universally bemoaned as it normally means replacing the headliner. Fortunately on my boat, the underlying fiberglass is solid and finished, so I have merely peeled off the sagging headliner and cleaned the glue residue. With some wax, the fiberglass looks quite good.

I'm facing that task in a different part of the boat as spring commissioning nears. My question to this distinguished audience is this. Does anyone know a solvent that takes off the glue residue? That is a brutal job. I've tried lighter fluid, acetone and MEK to no avail. My boatyard suggested oven cleaner, which is their choice for taking graphics off of hulls. Not so hot. Previously plain old elbow grease was the best, but my old elbows do not need more abuse. Has anyone found a solvent for this task?

Re: headliner glue

You may want to try goof off...it often will remove glue depending on the type.
