Hawse Pipes for Thick Bulwarks
Anyone know of a source for hawse pipes for thicker bulwarks? I've searched Google, Bing and Yahoo, but the biggest I found only handle up to 3-1/4" thick. Beausoleil's bulwarks are 3-7/8".

Check the British company Wichard they may be able to help you, then there in Port Towsend Foundry in Washington for custom castings if you come up for naught.

Are the faces of your bulwarks on the deck side and sea side parallel?
On many boats they are not....it can make it very difficult to get a proper fit.
When I up-sized mine we had to make them and it was a real bitch!
6 of them and each one different.

Mine are 3.5 in. and fit close at the top but have a 1/4 in. gap on the bottom on 4 of them. This gap is filled with something that looks like Sikaflex. (Flexable sealing filler) So far seems to be sound and leakproof. The sides are not parallel. They are the oval stainless ones with the cleats as part of the units.

Can you make me some too??? ;-) Mine are elliptical, and I haven't found anything like them in two years of looking. Total PITA. May have to go the custom cast route, but your looking at more than $150 a pop, plus chroming and polishing...

Try this site. Second Wave-Marine Consignment Stores
If you don't see what you want, call them. A lot of their stuff is not on the site. Too much to stuff to list.

Re: Hawse Pipes for Thick Bulwarks
You can do a decent looking job without casting.
I had the face plates laser cut from 1cm thick SS then made the inner liner/tube 4mm SS sheet.
They actually look cast.
If your thinking about a paint job anytime soon, this is also a chance the to "block out" around the hole in the space between the two surfaces and glass that baby closed...I had evidence of water intrusion in mine...not any more!
I'm sure they ended up more than 150 each...

James, your boat is where stainless dreams about going when it dies! ;-) Sweet job my friend! I know I can get the pieces water jet cut cheap locally, but having the plate bent to match the inside of the ellipse may be a real problem. Works for you though... BTW, how the heck are they held in??? There are no visible screws on the outside, and the screws on the inside seem to be too far out to grab the 4mm sheet... 5200???

Re: Hawse Pipes for Thick Bulwarks
Chris, On a 42 ft trawler type we built, we had the problem of fitting the hawsepipes thru the bow flair.
We made 30" of oval shaped tube with 2 parallel pieces of 2" PVC pipe, spaced with riveted on Formica laminate. Wrapped it in polyethylene, and then chop strand to 3/8" thichness.
Glassed these to the hull, with suitable overhangs.
Made a wood mock-up, and laid up exterior finish rings. Screwed St.Steel chafe strips on inner face.
Owner (friend of mine) uses fleece on his dock lines to reduce paint chafe. 25 yrs old, this year.

You know the only reason I post these pics is cause I know your gonna tell me how nice the work looks, and it will make my day....how pathetic is that!...anyway thanks.
The outside face plate and the center "tube"are welded together, what you see as screws on the inside plate are actually bolts that go through and are taped into the back of the outside face plate....that was very difficult to get them aligned since the face plates aren't parallel...the bolt head side was drilled with a drill press and if you look close you can see that the countersunk head isn't exactly flush with the plate.
The holes that got tapped were drilled with both pieces clamped in place and was very hard to do...also tapping a hole that's only about 8mm deep is tough...needed a blind tap and getting the alignment right with the tape took some doing...
I told you it was a bitch....and its one reason the refit took so long...some things weren't so well thought out before I was to far into them to take a different path.
I don't remember exactly how long it took to do those 6 pieces but I'll bet I had a solid month in them.

Luckily, on our Formosa the inner/outer faces of the bulwarks are parallel at mid-ship and the bow - only at the stern is it not. I figured I'd have it cut to the right angle by a local machinist, and grind/polish the cut to have the proper "flare". I do want to glass in the area around the cut-outs - that's the whole reason for this: chasing down and eliminating leaks...

Re: Hawse Pipes for Thick Bulwarks
The inner tube is easily marked and trimmed on site with a grinder.
Not thinking you would need a machinist to do it...its a doddle.
