Haulout on small travelift

Need to disconnect the forestay to haulout on a small travellift. The yard manager came up with this solution. We haul up a loop with the halyard, which is run down to a snathblock at the bow. The loop goes up to the first spreader which is 1/3 of the way up the mast. What do you guys think of this idea?

Go into the travelift stern first. It's done all the time. Backstay is easier to deal with.

Do you have roller furling?

Is your mast deck stepped?

Shimmy up mast and put a mooring line around the mast just above the spreaders. Use the halyard as a secondary. Remove the boom so it is not pulling mast back.

yeah roller furling. with deck stepped mast. I thought about reverse since I have swept back spreaders anyways. The yard manager seemed hesitant.

usually i dont trust this kind of operation if the yard doesnt accept to take liability of any damage.

I may be missing something here, but, from your pic
It appears that you have two halyards?-one from top of mast & one from under spreaders-tied off like forestays & capable of holding the mast up.
Just slack your backstay, pull the pin holding the furler to bow & swing the furler down the port foredeck & let it hang over the port side under the lifelines. Furler foils will "bend" enough to allow this.

I install & remove my mast each spring & fall this way.

Re: Haulout on samll travelift

Our closest yard only has a small lift, we have gone in astern with the backstay removed and our main halyard attached to a bridle that went through our aft midship cleats several times. It takes a little extra time, but has never presented any issue beyond that.

Stern first. Fairly common. Loose or remove the backstay.
Use main halyard to hold the mast in place of the backstay.

If the yard is hesitant to haul you stern first I would find a more experienced yard.

Another reason for liking more traditional rigs. With straight spreaders and 8 cables holding the mast up. Loss of one no big deal. I usually go stern first.

Well, with our fractional swept back spreader rig, we've removed the forestay, solent stay and baby stay in order to go head into a small travel lift. Mast is keel stepped (as I think is proper!) and it stood up just fine.

Another reason for liking less traditional rigs!

I second this idea; done it before myself.

You do appear to have two forward halyards and neither needs to be under a spreader. Simply secure both, one to each bow cleat (for safety/security/peace of mind) and ease the rig tension (backstay, shrouds and main sheet) just enough to retighten the halyards and unpin the base of the furling. Unless the travelift is REALLY small, there will be enough room to raise the boat.

Backing in to a travelift can work on boats that have a rig stepped further forward but, with a rig stepped further aft or one that is a high-aspect ratio, this won't necessarily give you the extra space you need to avoid the cross beam. I did this once with a previous boat and still had to ease the backstay.
