Hatch latch

On my 1975 Pearson 28 the small latch (a flat oval shaped piece) that extends through the door broke off. Turns out there was just one screw holding it on. And it swiveled on that screw. I know it's going to be a chore to get the broken piece out of the existing hole (if even possible) So I'm looking for latch replacement ideas. I can't just put a new hole next to it because it won't line up properly. Was thinking of making an "L" shaped piece bolted to the back. Any suggestions??

I let that locking method die and just put a hasp on the exterior. I was always catching things on the flat bar, tore shirts, etc....
