Looks like nice service, but you didn't get to make a serving mallet!

She totally needs a big asymetrical in a snuffer. Would be nice!

Would it be premature to start getting excited (at a distance, & by proxy)?

Regardless of your answer, I can't help it.

I personally find thoughtfully midwived* rebirths are at least as exciting as de novo, original launchings

*It's a valid Scrabble word so there!

I'll save figuring out the flying mallet for when I need to replace the rigging (probably 25 years - galvanized). This time around I had waaaaay to many other tasks on my plate.

O.K. I just recently figured out what an asymmetrical is and now I gotta research snuffer??? Is that like the sock thingamajig?

Ya, there is some exicment building. Maybe tempered by a couple of unpleasant upcoming tasks that involve my least favorite materials: Sand paper, Sandblast Sand and catalized Paint.

With those jobs done the pressure will be off and it will be all downhill from there.

Furnace drip pan large enough to contain the entire contents of the furnace day tank. Pan extends outboard and under some plumbing to contain leaks from that area as well.

Brow painted green.

I figured that the paint would chip easily along the edge so I ran a file all around the perimeter - no paint to chip.

Hard to get a decent shot of the thing with the boat nestled between two buildings and the mast laying across.

Sanding hell.

This cedar lid was installed 12 years ago and I am just now getting around to putting on a finish. The untreated wood has developed a blotchy "patina" that I am sanding out by hand.

99% of the work I do on Panope is fun. This is not fun.

I have only read a portion of this thread but I will finish it soon. I really like to read about people building/refitting boats but especially metal boats. This looks like a heck of a project. A post popped up on this thread this weekend and I have read a few pages...

A week or so ago, I joined the Metal Boat Society and ordered a CD of all of the back issues of the Metal Boat Quarterly. The CD arrived yesterday and I promptly copied the CD to my PC and my Kindle. Just by chance, I started reading some issues from 1995. I noticed a letter to the editor in the Summer 1995 quarterly. The letter was written by Michael who I see is a CF member.

I found a post by Michael that tells part of the story mentioned in the letter to the editor about sailing the Red Witch into a log raft in the middle of the night. The only damage to the boat was scratched paint.

I was more than a bit surprised to read the letter to the editor about the Red Witch and the mention of Panope after starting to read about your refit.
