They hole some very big Aircraft together.
Both Airbus and Boeing use them.

Yes they are for non structural items, like pieces of trim etc. Famous for turning in their hole so you can't undo the screw. You can't even drill them out easily because they turn with the drill. They pretty much suck.

"to hold aircraft together" sort of infers "structural" 
I concur "they suck" . I almost perfer loose nuts and I HATE them...
To get back (sorta) to the thread tropic, how about imperial threads that have beeb retapped with a metric tap   Not drilled out and done proper like  , just had a tap rammed down over the existing imperial thread.
Prolly don't see to many in USA, but in Oz, they turn here and there

I've worked for Boeing for 23 years. there are several types of blind nuts, "NUTSERTS" used from simple interior trim to heavy duty structural componets.

If you re-tap a 1/4" thread with a 6 mm tap, you've got to glue some matchsticks in the hole to take up the difference.

By way of reference the Isomat rig on my footer footer has .25" stainless steel rivets for the gooseneck (x8), halyard winch pads (x8), and horn cleats (x4). Based on that I guess you could try .1875" on the Cal 29 and see how it goes.
Would be very quick and painless to give it a try. Use the boat and keep an eye on it. If you see that they are getting loose you can always fall back on tapping 1/4-20's but my guess is it will be fine.
What size and what type of fasteners were on it originally would be the real question. Keep in mind the loads on the gooseneck fasteners are in sheer, not tension, so it's not like you have to worry about them pulling out.
