If you use the ones thar are installed with the cheap hand puller, that is true. If you use the phnematic, or thr hydrualic puller, they set very tight.

Iff'n Y'all ain't seen one of these, they are the cat's meow... I used to have one I think made by Greenlee, but it walked off with some other irreplaceable tools... It had a rate (force) adjustable bypass, and 1/4" SS rivets were no problemo... Even for the non Wheaties eater...

I've used these, and they do work well...
(no way I would put one in a mast though!)

Great idea Delancy Ed. I hadn't given any thought to how hard it might be for SS rivets, having only used the non-Wheaties-eater type.
D: What size and what type of fasteners were on it originally would be the real question. Keep in mind the loads on the gooseneck fasteners are in sheer, not tension, so it's not like you have to worry about them pulling out. 1/4-20 SS Machine screws ... but I suspect they had nuts on them and 7 are still goo-ed in place inside the stick. (that's sailor talk right there.)

I should be getting one too... but if I bought every $25 tool I wanted...
This one looked good too... A few shekels less... decide by reviews?

Both prolly roll off the same chinese assembly line, diff colors...

We give the kudos to the D-man... (this time anyway...) Your goose has a better wrap around footprint than his, and his proof in the pudding pics cement it nicely...

No google translator necessary! Stick some fasteners back in there so ya doesn't drop the rest 'O yer nuts... and have open holes... Or you could mount something useful like a still condenser...

Re: Hand Tap or Drill Motor?
Q: How many 1/4 -20 threads would fit into .1 " anyway?
A: Not many.

1/4-20 = 2
1/4-28 = 2.8
I think your answer is more accurate though!

Another rule of thumb, 3 threads min. for shear loads, 5 for tension.
It ain't a rule of thumb in aviation, it's the rule but for boats it could be

SS+Al=corrosion..use Monel
1/4" pops are the biggest I've used and using Monel they take quie a pressure to pop.

Re: Hand Tap or Drill Motor?
I will have to admit, I have never seen the drill tap combination bit. It makes sense since getting the tap aligned perfectly with the hole is the problem. Into an aluminum mast with some cutting oil sounds great an can ever see it with a low speed clutched drill. Cutting oil in a squirt oil can and rags to absorb the extra.
JMHO
Thanks to whoever mentioned the combo bits.

You may need to look around a bit. The place I found them is at the stores that sell tools & supplies for electricians.
