Hallberg Rassy Rasmus 35 Restoration / Refit

Hello all. I am new to this forum and glad to be a part. I am in the middle of a planned 4-5 year restoration of HR Rasmus. If anyone is interested I have a web site documenting the work. Address is HR Rasmus Home. Comments are welcome. Pat

Good site Pat...thanks....that’s a big job...and nice looking work.
One question is the bow roller...looks like the "axels" terminate in the sides of the notch in the wooden pieces....is this going to be enough....also...what are the rollers made of?

I admired your work and progress as well as the HR on your site. As to the roller question above, I replaced the aluminum roller with the plastic rollers that are sold as rollers on small boat trailers eight years ago. I spend much time at anchor with 5/16 chain and a 26,000lb boat. I've noticed no wear on my roller. Of course, I use a nylon line snubber to take the tension at anchor and the roller is only stressed when deploying or retreving the anchor. A chain hook with a snubber or bridle would also releive any potential stress on the anchor davit axel as James S refers to above. I'll be interested in following your progress. 'take care and joy, Aythya crew

Cool site, nice boat!

Was the original mast not anodized? I believe they were anodized when they came from the factory.

A friend of mine is thru his 4th HR now (a HR46) while he still has the Misil. He claims the Rasmus had the best sailing properties - smooth movement, responsiveness and loads of stability.

Good luck with your project!

Nice job...

G'day and welcome to the Forum.

From the photos it looks like you're doing a real nice job.

I wish I had your skills.

Thanks for the comments. I copied the original bow platform. In hindsight I wish I would have put more thought into it to possibly make it better fit my anchoring needs. Replying to the post above, the axle does not terminate at notch sides but runs thru to the outer edge, just like the original. The rollers are nylon or polyplastic cheap trailer rollers. It's nice to hear that folks like their HR Rasmus as I have only worked on and never sailed one. Hope to change that.

I figured the pin must go all the way through...my concern is the only support is the thickness of the wood from the pin down...
There is probably a couple ways to enhance its strength with out any big changes.
Thu-bolting plates over and under where the pins are would transfer the load from just the bottom of the wood to its entire thickness and stop the bottom wood from “splitting away” under a load.
Once again I'd like to complement your work and excellent site.

wow!!!! respect. As an owner of an old 42 HR catch I am inspired by your restoration project. From now on, at least for the near future, I'll remember your work whenever I get frustrated by everyday maintenance.

Re: Hallberg Rassy Rasmus 35 Restoration / Refit

Impressive work you got there. I'm a proud owner of a 1978 Hallberg-Rassy Ramus 35 for 34 years and sad that I'm letting it go. My body doesn't allow me to sail anymore. If you know anyone who interested in buying a HR, please check out my post. Thanks kindly.
