Grounding , stringer - hull separation

Grounding happens to everybody , some boats will tolerate a mild.touch on a soft bottom but when you hit a rock and mostly because of the tide damage can be major that's what happened to us and got a Stinger unglue itself from the hull .
I did a temporary repair and check as many points and will hault out the boat in 2 months when in Caribbean.
Here are some photos of.the temp repair , I would.like your opinions.

Grounding , stinger hull separation

Imho, yank the temporary repair off, go at the whole area with a grinder and make a new repair without bonding to gelcoat.

The piece on the gellcoat is only where the mat came a.little bigger , unfortunately I don't have any resin and they don't sell here so that will have to do until Caribbean or cape Verde if I find fiberglass for a proper repair

I think I can see many stress cracks in the gelcoat, which is not a good sign.

Your repair looks reasonable, even though hard to see from the photos, but I am sure you will find more damage once you have the boat on the dry and start to dig into it.

I grinded part of the stinger the stress cracks seems to be only on the gellcoat and the upper layer of resin (for some reason both are thick )
But yes it wories me as well , probably I will look forward to get the keel down and make a proper repair or evaluation once on hard .

I would hire a surveyor to advise...
It is amazing how much damage can be done in a simple grounding. Been there, done that! Proper repair is essential for a safe boat.
Hire someone who understands the issues!

if this is the aft most stringer behind the keel and none of the other forward stringers over the keel have delaminated then it is probably not of great concern.
you do need to check the area under the floor where the keel starts for delamination and water seepage as this area will have been pulled down at the same time as the aft section was pushed up when you hit the rock at speed.

check your rigging terminals and chain plates as well as the shock loading might have caused damage to old rigging.

i have seen much worse on charter boats where the whole under floor web and some bulkheads have come unglued.

Just a friendly spelling correction to the author, in case this thread might be corrected for future reference for others: st'R'inger.

Well, no, it doesn't.
Hire a pro to remove your temporary repair and redo it in a proper manner.

Re: Grounding , stringer - hull separation

Yes, groundings happen not to everybody but to many of us. It is just a question of how much you sail and in what areas. I have had a few.

As you are in a place where proper repairs can not be made, do what sailors have done since the dawn of time. Repair it as good as you can in place, and then sail the boat to a place where it can be done properly. In all likelihood, the keel will stay attached, but of course it is a slight risk. Weighing risks is up to you.

Re: Grounding , stringer - hull separation

Temporary repair looks good - no question - but only you know what other damage may be lurking. Be prepared for much more major work when you get to civilisation. And let all your future groundings be little ones. (I haven't heard of any boat that never grounded - I've just about managed to dredge a new channel from my current marina. )

Thank you for the kind words , I am trying to decide how and where to reinforce the keel area , I want my boat to be able to withstand groundings better .

I would invest more effort in grounding avoidance.
