grounded damage to keel sump...

ok I just obtained this sailboat and the keel is evidently crooked, its leaking at the joint... this is a steel keel that represent 52% of the boats total displacement. obvious the steel keel did not bend therefore the bent occurred in the sump part of the hull...
my plan before removing the keel is to straiten it back to original... I want to hagn the boat so the keel is totally suspended in mid air, at this point I might if I have to heat the hull to allow some stretch on the compressed side.

I want opinions about this and also tips on reinforcing the sump.

Re: grounded damage to keel sump...

I wonder if it's the way the boat has been loaded on the trailer rather than the hull. Any chance of getting it lifted by that boat lift in the back ground so the hull is supported and the keel hanging free.

Can't see heat doing any good btw.

Re: grounded damage to keel sump...

I am not sure about this...I could properly sand the joint all around the keel and glass a tape to prevent water exit or inter, then launch as she is and sail her from ottawa to montreal and see how she handles....can always do the keel off thing next fall?

enjoying summer is whats its all about right!!!
