Green stuff?

I was asked by a client today if this green stuff is from stray currents?

70s timber trawler and the picture is of the stuffing box.

Is this normal corrosion? Is there a solution?

Yes, and if that ain't normal, then I'm in trouble, mine is actually more widespread, looks like in your picture it's been cleaned off?

Brass is made form Zinc & Copper. Copper oxidizes and is accelerated by salt and moisture.

In one sense a "coating" of copper oxide is good - as the corrosion process requires air to continue oxidizing and once a nice coating of oxide is on it in "theory" it stops oxidizing - yup...

I prefer not to have green corrosion on all my stuff and I don't like not knowing what is going on under the oxide especially as the thing keeps the ocean out of the boat.

I would clean it - a mild acidic like vinegar can help.

If you don't seal it - i.e. clear coat paint or paint. It will eventually corrode again. Ultimately over the years until it needs to be replaced.
