Glimpse: Sailboat Engine Replacement

I've been recording in extreme detail the process of an inboard diesel engine replacement from start to finish. I thought I would share a glimpse of what that looks like for a do it yourselfer.

We still have tons of stuff to do, but I thought I'd share these photos.

There is an extreme amount of detail in our blog. If you've considered this project yourself take a look. And to all of those that have done it and especially to those that have given us the advice to do it ourselves.... My hat goes off to you ladies and gents.

Behold.

Destruction

Reminds me a little of "Drill bit Dave" (he drilled through the bottom of his boat with a 1/4" bit while in the water installing some wiring for his stereo). What amazes me here is where did you get the time to actually take pictures?

I have a dedicated photographer.

So are you suggesting that we screwed up and put a hole through our boat where it doesn't belong like ol' Dave?

Well done! Looks great. I like your filter system. Could you put some narrative to it so I can get a better idea of how it works.
kind regards,

John,

The entire install is here:
Engine Room Refit – Fuel System | SV Sundowner sails again

Here is a really crude drawing I made to explain it:

Basically the two valves are the supply and return selectors. The filters sit between the supply valve and the engine. One day I may plumb in a polishing system, but right now that isn't in the budget.

Re: Glimpse: Sailboat Engine Replacement

As a side note, those Griffin filters are a knock of of the more well known Racors. We found the entire setup for around $550 as compared to the 800+ Racors. I called Griffin's line in Houston and they were awesome and prompt in their tech support. They also use identical filters to the Racors. No affiliation, just a tip for those wanting the same setup.

Re: Glimpse: Sailboat Engine Replacement

I've been following your progress in the blog. Its coming along nicely.

Actually I keep drooling over your direct access plate at the bottom of the foot well. Once I get ye old dinosaur out of Sabre Dance I'm going to have a really close look at the structure under my cockpit floor and possibly do the same. It would certainly make life a lot easier.

So let me get this straight... First you accuse me of drilling a hole through the bottom of my boat, and when I ask about it, you compare me to a b*tch?

Geesh!

Tough crowd.
