Re: gearbox KBW10

Have the same gearbox and engine setup in my boat WITH the same problem. THE shop to fix these is ANTHONY KEATS here in Ontario Canada. Their technician with a good reputation by the way figures its thrust washers and a disk wear out problem. The bottom line is it is fixable. He will rebuild the clutches end to end for about $1300.00. You can not get a replacement unit new as it is a legacy item(obsolete) but the parts are still available. Check your linkage travel first. You need 35mm or 1 1/2 inches from neutral to fwd or to rev. Good luck...I am pulling mine for overhaul when the snow reduces. Fyi box has been with this boat since 1977.

Im seeing the trans mentioned as Kansaki/hurth. This may be useful information for you at rebuild time to get some more life out of the trans between rebuilds.

Re: gearbox KBW10

I dont think youd be able to see anything, the steels and clutches are not too visible. Mine looked fine inside when it had failed. Theyre a pita to rebuild. Assemble a few parts. take measurements, buy a correct ship, assemble some more, more measurements maybe need another shim. Cant tell what your going to need till you get to the next measurement point. Took ordering a couple of shims for me in different orders and they were around $40 apiece. I guess every rebuild will be different. Did you see if the clutches were grabbing when you had it out?
