Garmin Chart Plotter Wiring Route

I recently purchased a chart plotter and I would like to mount it to the SS pedestal guard. Just wondering how most of you sailors who have instruments at the helm run the cables. Is there a water proof grommet that I can purchase to run the cables up from the cockpit sole. The cables would be in the way if I come through the side and swing over to the guard. Not sure how to do this. I appreciate any direction Thx

Re: Garmin Chart Plotter Wiring Route

Ran our cables right through the centre of the vertical steering shaft inside the steering column and out the bottom. 8 years on, no problems. Waterproof grommet on the top of the compass base leads to the back of the Garmin.

Re: Garmin Chart Plotter Wiring Route

I recently bought a Garmin 741 and am mounting on the Edson pedestal on a 34ft Pacific Seacraft.. I don't think I have enough room from the top of my compass to the top of the pedestal guard... So - I am going with a RAM Mounting Bracket. I bought a RAM mount at a Bass Pro-shop and their ball and socket design makes it a very flexible solution for many applications... I'm going to use the Edson pedestal rail mount to attach the RAM Mount to the pedestal. I'll run the GPS cable through the pedestal guard tube... Should do the job...

Here's a link to the ram mount that I just bought

If you have not done so already, check to ensure that your new plotter does not interfere with your steering compass before you mount it permanently. Some Garmin plotters have an internal magnet on the chip door that will effect a compass. Some also seem to effect a compass once they are energized. I tried several different plotters before I found a version that had no effect. One can temporarily power a plotter with a small 12v battery to determine whether energizing a unit will have any effect.

FWIW...
