Fuel Polishing with Algae-X

My boat came with a fuel polishing system with Algae-X installed in 2002 in Florida.

The set up is 2 diesel tank - manifold - Puratec (centrifugal filter with a water separator - does not have any disposable cartridge ) - Algae-X and a 12v pump - return to manifold and tank.

What does this Algae-X really do?

Do I need to add a Racor filter?

Thanks for your input.

Other than prove misleading advertizing works on the uninformed, it does nothing other than give the purchaser a false sense of accomplishment.

It also adds another break in the fuel line. Which is really convienant when your engine hasn't gotten air locked in a while and you want to practice bleeding your injectors. Lee shores are an option, but nice to have.

Please translate this link from Danish:
Dieselpest - www.udkik.dk
and you will get answers on the main dieselproblems on boats with long resting fuel.

Re: Fuel Polishing with Algae-X

Wait a minute - the Puratec filtration part of that system is fine; don't toss it. You can remove the little algae-x device if you want, but it isn't doing any harm - it just isn't doing anything at all. I guess it could be a potential leak down the road, but I would just leave it in until that happens.

Our boat came with three of the algae-x installed! Removing them would require me to run a lot of new hose, so I just leave them be. They haven't done us any good or bad for 16yrs now.

Perhaps just throw a sheet over it, to hide it from view.
