Fuel filter change interval.

I changed my filter after 70hrs because the engine died twice on a long motor run. After i changed it, it ran 20 hours without issue. Granted i never scrubbed my tanks, but is this the normal interval? Seems frequent on a 63hp diesel... I change the one on my on road dodge every 60-80k...

Your filter change interval is normalized to the clarity of your fuel. If this boat sat as long as you at it did then your fuel at the very least will have a fair bit of bug in it.

I change filters every other oil change (500 hrs) unless they need it sooner.

Not abnormal given time in the tank of your fuel. If the filter you are talking about is the threaded spin on mounted of the engine, use a filter cutter to open it up and see what is lurking inside. If the filter you mention is a remote water separator/filter, check that for type of contamination as well. Treat your fuel with Bio-Bore biocidal agent. You could also consider having a on site fuel polishing service come and spend some time on your boat if you are near a big marina. Don't forget the pick up In your tank as well. The course screen located there can also be occluded by trash and dead microbes.

I service our Racor's at least once/year, and replace the elements as necessary (twice or thrice, so far, over 8 years).

I change our secondary filters once/year.

Our annual engine time runs roughly between 125-150 hours/year.

- If the bowls don't look spotless I clean them, or at least clean one (I have dual racors).
- I clean them both every year regardless.
- I replace the on-engine filter every year regardless.

I think your boat may have set up for a pretty long time? As said "bugs" will grow in Diesel and only a bio-cide will kill them, but once you do kill them, be prepared for quite a few clogged filters. Best to add the bio-cide once you get to where you are going, wait a few days and have one of the fuel filtering services filter your fuel.
Once the bugs are dead and gone there are products that will keep them form growing, you would think fuel would have this already in it wouldn't you?
These bugs look like snot in a filter, like a slime, not dirt or rust

Definately bugs! I just had the problem, and took the tank and all hoses out for a clean up. I couldnt belive the amount of dead bugs! It really looked like a cow had taken a dump in my tank😩. Clean it up, this can ruin the season. Good luck, it is not a nice job..
