Free Boat!!

Hey everyone. So I recently had someone give me a Hunter 23.5. From the pictures, she doesn't look too bad. She hasen't seen water in 6+ years. Ive grown up on boats but this will be my first sailboat. I'm hoping some of you experts could tell me what red flags I should be looking for. Im pretty sure all sails will be ruined and the teak will be shot but i can work with that.Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys!

After a six year layup you may have issues with engine and electrics, things like rubber impellers and switches. Also check things like the bladders on lifejackets. Batteries will almost certainly be junk otherwise lucky you!!

Re: Free Boat!!

Most people don't give away boats out of kindness, but because they're very aware fixing her up again costs more then buying another boat ...

There's exceptions to that rule of course, so maybe you got lucky.

Do you have a link to the pics, if they're online?

A wise friend once said: "never accept more free stuff than you can afford."

Only way to know is to inspect the boat, but usually you are better off just buying one in decent condition to start with.

Sails and rigging?
Standing rigging should be ok, do check the running rigging as well, the engine if it's in board.

Re: Free Boat!!

I believe it's a trailerable centerboard with an outboard motor, I was prepared to say free horses or sailboats always cost more than they are worth, but you might have been fortunate. As others have said, there's not much that could go seriously wrong with a boat that doesn't have a lot of stuff to go bad anyway and is less than 25 years old. Merry Christmas and congratulations.
