Frans Maas Standfast 40 - Constuction/Coring

Hi,

I am looking at possible purchase of an older Standfast 40 designed by Frans Maas, and I am trying to find out more about the contruction of this boat.

Some have suggested that she has a cored hull while I have seen else that she is described as a pure fiberglass hull.

Anyone has any experience with these boat and able to shed some light on their construction, coring and also any typical problems that one should be aware of?

Thanks,
Mathias

Great sailing boat, very capable.
Only problem I had was knees breaking away in the forepeak, which may have just been badly glassed in on the one I delivered, but check.
This was during a 1000 mile heavy weather, mostly forward of the beam, out-of-season delivery.

Re: Frans Maas Standfast 40 - Constuction/Coring

Mathias,

Who actually built the hull? We had a Standfast 36 for years, loved her... but the actual hull construction for that series was done by a neighboring firm, Peterson IIRC, who mostly did FG vessels for the navy.

At any rate, she was done in Airex foam core, but with FG scantlings of great thickness.

One 40 was dropped from the slings in a boatyard in San Diego, landing on its keel and then sliding down a bank, landing then upon another boat, doing it grievous injury. The PJ when then surveyed had only cosmetic damage. We met that boat in the South Pacific years later, and she was still alive and well.

Cheers,

Jim
