First year of ownership- CD36 progress

Hi there,
The other evening my wife and I realized it had been a year since we bought our first boat a 1979 Cape Dory 36. To remind ourselves of the progress we have made we looked at pictures from that first visit and read the pre-purchase survey again. It was surprisingly positive, she’s was a good old boat...okay maybe with emphasis on "old". She clearly needed some work but that was part of the appeal to me. Under that moss, horrid teak and accumulated stuff I saw a boat that made my heart beat a little faster and I just knew I could turn her into a little gem of our own.

This past Sunday I tried taking a few pictures in similar angles to those from our first visits 12 months ago. It was a good reminder and a rewarding comparison. As you can tell we still have some work in progress and most of the projects we have completed don't show in pictures but that's besides the point. It's been worth every ounce of effort. We love her and look forward to year two.

Cheers,
J

Oh I am sorry! I tried a different image hosting service that I hope will work better. Let me know if the images below are still missing.

Cheers,

She cleaned up nicely!
Have you had an opportunity to try out the Hydrovane?

Wow! You did that fast.

It took me about 8 years to get mine in similar condition.

I sailed mine mostly as is for those 8 years adding, replacing, and painting things here and there as needed (including the interior)

Also, I'm still trying to figure out if I bought the right boat......

Re: First year of ownership- CD36 progress

Yeah, we agree with the other post about your quick progress on the restoration. Nice to get so much done in the first year.

We have a CD31 that we bought in '13. We're just this year finishing up the last big project: all new exterior canvas. Mostly budget that slowed us down, as we had to do an (unscheduled) repowering in '16.

These old CDs have aged well and are still very much worth bringing back to top condition. Solid, safe boats that can handle any kind of weather.

We've been cruising coastal Maine for several years and have learned something about the CDs: they're relatively immune to picking up lobster traps. Many thanks to Carl Alberg for the rudder/keel design. We've yet to snag one.

We met a former CD regional sales rep in Atlantic City some years back. He told us "your CD can take a lot more than you can." Can't argue with him on that one.

We always try to thank owners who have restored some of the classics, in wood as well as fiberglass, for keeping the beauties among us so we can all enjoy seeing them in their element.

We wish you the very best of luck with you're fine new boat.

Jennifer and Terry
