Re: Fiberglass thru hull fittings

Several tears ago there was a string of reported failures with Marelon valves. If I recall correctly, the handles were breaking at the retaining screws.

I have had Marelon valves in the past and have also had them seize/break. I am more comfortable with true bronze seacocks. Ball valves are not seacocks!

More to the point, Brass as you buy from Home Depot is most often Yellow Brass. It is loaded with zinc which will quickly disappear in sea water. Bronze for marine use has way less zinc and more copper. It is frequently called red brass. You can easily see the reddish cast in the cut threads. I understand that standards have been relaxed in Europe & some of these fittings may not be as good or long-lived.

I have both plastic & bronze. Below water is all bronze.

If you need any of this check out Wolf's Marine. Prices are sometimes ridiculously lower than other sources. Photo form my visit last spring. Headed there in a week for their spring thaw. Call for anything you do not find on the site - many more non-inventory items.
