Fiberglass Repair Question

I have a hole in my fiberglass boat that i would like to fix. At some time in its life a previous owner cut a hole in a locker so that it could be accessed from the cabin. This also allows water to acess the cabin through the locker. The hole is about 7 inchs by 10 inchs and in the wall of the cockpit locker. Ive done some fiber glasssing but never anything like this.

The people at West System have a very good booklet on fiberglass boat repair, couple of bucks, will cover in detail the type of repair ou are facing. Make the repair with polyester resin and cloth and save much dollars over epoxy.

And the question is... ? (most likely that you want to fill in the hole and perhaps you're interested in ideas on how to do this, no?)

If that's the case, it's not difficult to do, depending upon color match of paint or gel-coat.

For an area that size it may be easier to make a "panel" of FG, then cut it to shape then silicone and bolt it into place. If you make the panel and inch larger all round you will have an easy size to work with.

The easiest way to make it is to use an old sheet of glass ( real glass) or the flat side of masonite. Apply the release agent of choice, then the gell coat then a couple of layers of FG. After curing, cut it to shape and bolt on .

my 2 cents fwiw.

Cheers
Oz

Why do you have water in your locker? Where is is going to go when you fill the hole? Just wondering...
