Fasteners for Zincs

Idora is a wood Ingrid. While hauled out this week I discovered that I have been subject to stray current while at the dock. The power in the marina is not suspect. (Brand new wiring.) I think it was one or more of my neighbors. In any event I am moving to a new slip far away from the offending spot.

The zinks did their job and the dripless stern bearing and shaft and prop as well as the rudder pintals sustained no dammage. However the rate of erosion of the zinks caused some loss of wood fiber where the zinks were mounted. I desire to stop that erosion. Has anyone tried non conductive fasteners? If so what did you use?

Re: Fasteners for Zinks

Non-conductive fasteners would negate the correct functioning of the zinc. Remember, for a zinc to properly function as an anode it must be electrically connected to the metal it is protecting. It's possible that you could use an insulating sleeve of some sort, but the fastener itself must be capable of conducting electric current.
