Extend a Helm Pedestal

The PO of my new boat added a step in the cockpit area where the helm seat goes and now the helm pedestal is 7" too short. A new one is too much money. Looking for ideas how to extend my current one by 7".

Build a box under it. You'll need to make longer steering cables.

Buy a bigger wheel? What do you mean by too short? Do you like your hands up at chest level or forearms level with the deck?

Do not want a box and steering is just fine as is. We want to be able to see over the cabin.
Other suggestions?

Well... just measure the tubing and see if you can find the same OD. Have a piece welded on.
I'm probably missing something but doesn't seeing over the cabin have more to do with what you are sitting/standing on than how high the pedestal is...?

Re: extend a helm pedestal

Are you sure that tube isn't removable from the base? It looks like an Atwood-style one, and those often have removable/exchangeable posts.

If not removable, they are often just pressed into the pedestal and you may be able to press it out.

If so, then you only need a different post.

I think he's talking about a SEAT pedesta.

Online metals, TUBE is sold in sensible sizes and matches the named diameter. TUBE is different from the named diameter.

Gives you lots of choices.

Re: Extend a Helm Pedestal

Find a pipe/tubing that the inner diameter matches the outer diameter of your existing. Decide desired height of such tubing, drill through bolt holes (i'd suggest 2-3) or have it welded to existing. And Ta-da you'll have your extension!

It's helm seat extension. Just source some suitable pipe/ tube
