You sure that is a ball and not a tapered plug or bung? It looks like it's adjustable. Some of those old valves are a bit weepy until you tighten the nut which seats the taper tighter.

Guy is correct. That is a plug valve/seacock. Far nicer then a modern ball valve.

And... what kind is it? Who is the maker? I have not been able to find out anything about it. They look stoutly built.

This is very likely original equipment on a 24' Aquarius Pilot Cutter (a new to me boat).

My plan was (but I don't think I will find them) to find two more of these to put on a couple hoses on the boat which are seacockless.

You don't need rebuild kits to refurbish these valves. Go here Compass Marine How To Articles Photo Gallery by Compass Marine How To at pbase.com and follow his instructions on servicing tapered cone seacocks. Better still would be to follow his instructions on installing real flanged seacocks. I really hate to see valves just screwed onto thru hulls and called seacocks. Another option would be to put a Groco flanged adapter between the valve and the thru hull.

Yeah, I'm with you. I realize they aren't "real seacocks", but as long as they are working well I am keeping them ($$$). I plan to upgrade to Spartans or Blakes when they crap out. Thanks for the information on servicing and the Grocos.

Thing is, they never"crap out". They may be old fashion but it will be a while before you change them for that reason.

I don't have a problem with the valves, just that they are not supported by a flange and the threads don't match the thru-hull threads. You can re-use the valves. I'm just suggesting that if you do, install Groco flanged adapters to solve the two weaknesses I just mentioned.

And...they're coming out.

I did a little research--it's only been 5 years.

These are not seacocks. They are brass water valves.

I contacted a few bronze foundries with pictures and one of them said they looked like brass. They suggested they were gas valves.

So, I posted pictures on a plumbing forum and they said they were water valves.

The one nut on the bottom of my valve indicates it as a water valve (see the top picture of my initial post). If it had two nuts that would indicate it was a gas valve.

The first picture below is of a water valve similar to mine. The second shows a two-bottom-nut gas valve.

I then specifically asked the plumbers if my valves were brass. One of the more experienced plumbers said, " yes.. they are 100% solid lead bearing brass."

These looked like really good quality bronze valves to me; I had no idea they were not even a marine/boat product. Just something to be aware of when buying or refitting a boat.

I did some more googling and I think I found out the meaning of the HF on the side of the valve: "Hf " means hard faced. The seats are typically harder than the other parts of the valve so they can stand the action of being opened and closed. The seat is typically the place where grit, sand, or other particles tend to be trapped and abrade the surface.
