Deviation (Too Much) on Compass

Would anyone know where (and how) to look for reasons to very large deviation on my Marco Polo compass - still originally mounted on the steering column - no extras to interfere (as I know)?

I have Raymarine instrumentation - 2 feet away - batteries below deck. Any suggestions are welcome.

Kind regards

How much deviation are we talking about and how much has it changed since you got your boat?

Hello Astrid.

Well - depends on - If I use the compass compensation i one heading (fx. west) - then its awful north or south, resulting in deviation of 20-25 degrees. I of course have other navigation equipment (GPS and chartplotter) and a fluxgate compass - but it's anoying to have that kind of failure.

This deviation came last year - and I am positive, that no changes have been made - at least that I can think of.

Do you have any ideas?

What compass compensation is that - the magnets? Something you are changing with heading?

Re: Deviation (Too Much) on Compass

Hello captain

Thanks for all your efforts. About the magnets -in fact I don't know. The compass are built in a console, which I havn't managed to dissasemble. It's a Goiot steering console, and the stainless bolts are stuck in the aluminium.

Re: Deviation (Too Much) on Compass

Hello Michael

Please se my former answer to captainKJ about the magnets. What I mean with one heading is: If I compensate the compass to show the rigth heading in west it's out of alignment in other directions.

Re: Deviation (Too Much) on Compass

there are different magnets for east-west and north-south,,BOTH SET have to be alined correctly,,,, some go fore and aft the other go right and left,,,you can hire someone to do this for you but expensive,,,

http://www.irbs.com/bowditch/pdf/chapt06.pdf

might be best just to do a compass deviation card and go from there
