Dazzle anyone?

This is my boat:

I'm toying with the idea of painting it in a WWII Dazzle Camo pattern similar to below. Anybody seen it done? Would I have crazy liability if someone hit me claiming they couldn't judge my speed?

cool? Stupid? what say you?

I guess it has been done, this is probably closest to what I had in mind.

Re: Dazzle anyone?

This is a joke, right?

Or are you seriously considering making your boat harder to see and increasing the odds for someone running into you?

Talking to professional mariners, they often ask why we all have white boats with white sails in a sea with white foamy wave tops. They universally wish that we would paint our boats in vivid colours to make them MORE visible to them.

You ask is this a bad idea??? Yep, it is IMO!

Cheers,

Jim

Re: Dazzle anyone?

On the other hand, there will be lots of room in your marina. Noone will want their boat docked next to a floating exhibition of modern art..........

I'd also suggest you mount a 6 inch fake canon on the front deck. Then just let them thar revenuers try anything!

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Re: Dazzle anyone?

I vote dazzle for sure, but it would be way cooler in yellows and reds. This would make Jim happy as well.

I think it is kind of cool, but a bad idea!

Re: Dazzle anyone?

I think it would be cool and a great conversation starter, but you may find yourself harassed by CBP more as a potential smuggler! Perhaps flying a "battle flag" would be a fun way to offset the perception that you are trying to hide from other boats?

Re: Dazzle anyone?

OK, first of all, even in WWII it didn't make the boats harder to see, it made it harder to judge their speed and bearing. And that was scientifically determined to only work if they were going fast... So I doubt I'll really have a problem with that either.

Secondly, I am thinking of leaving the cabin white and the sails/masts will be as well.

And lastly I'm certainly planning on keeping a vigilant lookout.

But it has occurred to me that this may be a move akin to the bumfuzzle's painting their MOB pole gray, which I thought was pretty nutty.

And there is a bright colored yacht that did it. I think the HMS Belfast is beautiful but I really dislike the colorful one.

lol, ok I have a confession to make. One of the reasons I want to do this is that the previous owner of my boat was Guy Williams, the Actor who played Zorro in the B+W TV series and he was the dad in lost in space.

So I kind of wanted to pay hommage to that history by making the boat three colors, kind of similar shades of blue/gray and separating them with a big "Z" in the center.

I think I can still get away with that, but C'mon shark teeth would be 'busy'

So now in addition to all of the other issues mentioned we can add trademark infringement.
