Re: Davit suggestions for Catalina 36 MkII

Installed Garhauer davits on our Benneteau 351 a year ago, with 2- 240 watt solar panels above. Garhauer builds all their davits basically to custom and we had an extra 14" added to the height for the panels to clear the bemini and allow some use of the transom walk through with the dink in place. Been in the Bahamas for the past four months and the system has worked great so far. Call Fred at Garhauer and he can help you.

an electric pump works fine and quickly. Pumping up the dingy is the least of the hassle.

Re: Davit suggestions for Catalina 36 MkII

I have an Avon RIB with a folding transom. Before I custom made a combo davit/swim step davit system I lifted the dink onto the foredeck. I used my shop vac to deflate the tubes. It's amazing how small the tubes get when you deflate them this way. I'm able to fold the tubes under the hull which makes for a very small footprint on deck. I also use the shop vac to inflate the dink which works rather fast. I then use the foot pump to firm up the tubes.

I've never been a fan of towing the dink when the weather kicks up as it's too easy for the dink to flip and then there's not much you can do to recover it. I sail in the PNW and use to tow the dink all the time. I now have a davit system that makes it really easy to launch and recover. I would not, however, leave it on the davit when coastal cruising but store it deflated on the foredeck. I worry about a being caught out in a following sea and being pooped on. That’s a lot of weight crashing down on a large surface area and I don’t think the davit could handle such a load. I may be worrying about nothing here but ……

Might I also suggest you inquire at Catalina36.0rg. Great group of folks there with extensive experience with your specific boat.

Hi Mike

Yes, that is part of the plan, as soon as I sign the contract and the boat becomes mine

This should be done by next Wednesday
