davit motivication--need ideas

dear reader
I am just restoring a ferro cement boat.
pics are here

https://www.flickr.com/photos/awab/

The project goes well so far. I have a break in the moment and working on ideas for my davits.

It is important to get the dinghy up easy at night/ noice etc
and on short trips between the islands.
I am normally taking the dinghy on deck on longer open sea passages.

The old system had the davits out and could bring a dinghy up via pullys. I have the feeling this takes up to much room between the davit and the dinghy. The dinghy would be not high enough and is no sufficent secured for side movements.

On my last day in the marina I was cutting a pvc pipe and pushed it over the old structure to see the differnce in design.
Any comments in davit design are well come.
thx
peter

Hi Peter,

If you want to include a photo with your post look a few cm below the box where you are typing the message and you will see a place to click called "manage attachments".

Click there and follow the instructions to attach a photo.

Regarding the davits, I have had the same questions. First to stop the side to side movement of the dinghy the only solution I know is to firmly tie the dinghy to the stern of the boat, side to side to hold it in place. If you have davits that rotate then also fix the davits firmly in place. I added two cross bars between my two davits to keep them stable and add some strength.

I have a very short harness to hold my dinghy so can raise it very high. It is about 0.5 M below the pulley on the davit which I think is high enough for day sails and coastal cruising. Like you, I will bring the dinghy on deck for off shore.

I've seen some use a spreader bar set-up instead of a harness made of webbing.
