Cutlass Bearing removal

A,fellow in the boat yard where I,am hauled,Has A Problem,He has a 1969 Choy Lee 36 Luders,He tried to remove his cutlass bearing with a saw's all
the rubber portion came out leaving the brass still in the tail piece,Putting my finger in I,could feel the shaft log at least I,think it is it has ridges in it and sit's in the hull.Does the tail piece come off he stated that on the inside he sees two screws coming thru not machine screws but self taping type screws I,can see no screw heads from the out side,Anyone with any info on this type of bost PLEASE ADVISE,The Guy just got out of the Army and wants to cruise for a couple of years before settleing in.All Help will be appreciated
