Couple of questions

Background:
I was given a 15 ft fiberglass for a skiff style boat, whaler style. I would like to use a 25 go to push it, so I need to keep it light. I will only be using it for a few month so I want to keep it cheap, and it doesn't need to last forever.

Questions.

Can I attach the stringers and transom with 5200 and skip glassig them in? Please remember this doesn't need to last forever.

How do I make it sure the walls are strong? Will a few cross beam benches work or do I need to add ribs up the walls from the stringers?

I want the boat to be about 350 pounds. I am at 150 pounds with the shell, do you think I can add only 150 pounds of wood and have it be safe?

Thanks

Re: Couple of questions

Sorry, I didn't mention that it's just the fiberglass skin. Everything else has been gutted. Any ideas?

No. That 25 hp engine deserves some respect. Do the job right, especially if you'll be taking the boat out in water deeper than you can stand up in.

Only takes one good bump to rip a transom off.

Re: Couple of questions

I can get some pictures in the morning. So what you are saying is glassing in the stringers is the only way? I'm just not sure I am up to that challenge. I have never done this before and have lots of questions. I don't want to end up spending lots of money just to end up with a boat that doesn't work.

Re: Couple of questions

Here is a 200 pound boat with a 25, stringers are set in epoxy filets, no glass. laminated transom knees and extreme plywood curves give her strength.
So , It can be done , but a bit of engineering is in order.

115lb 2 cycle, 3/8 " transom

Re: Couple of questions

It is almost impossible to offer any practical advice without pictures but Bash is spot on. The engine is going to weigh 150+ pounds and I suspect is worth a few boat bucks.

So 150# for the shell, 150# for the engine and you are already at 300# - The engine is going to load the transom pretty well. I would be thinking at least 3/4 inch and perhaps 1 inch marine ply glassed in for the transom with the load carried into the sides of the boat.

Then perhaps two bulkheads incorporated into rear and forward benches to add rigidity to the shell with perhaps a small foredeck triangle.

I know this sounds like way more work than you want to do and it wil likely end up way heavier than 500#.

Depending on use of the boat have you considered a smaller motor? A lot easier if you are talking 9hp.

Re: Couple of questions

Thanks, I guess I will glass it or give it away. I was shooting for 350 pounds of boat, not including the engine weight because that's what my 25 hp specs says it can get on a plane.
