Compounding and Waxing Topsides

Would like suggestions on compounding and waxing products to use on topsides of my 1984 Cheoy Lee 42. I have good polishing equipment. thanks, bill

I use car waxes. We clean the topsides first with soap and lot of water.

Avoid anything harsh - some compounds contain way too harsh grit.

I find Collonite products work well. Go on easy, come off easy and shine well. When I am done each spring my now 26 yrs old gelcoat looks new.

Hi Bill

I had the same problem last year so after looking around I bought a Meguirs polisher and tried their Compound and wax sealer.
I am please with all three products, not cheap but good!.

I'm very pleased with 3M Finesse. It's not a polishing compound but did a better job of removing stains and the dull finish than did buffing compound. A big consideration in not getting overly aggressive with buffing compound is the loss of the gel coat. My 40 year old hull has been compounded so often that the underlying FRP layup is beginning to show through. Time for a paint job that might not have been needed if PO's hadn't buffed away so much of the gel coat.

I don't use a machine. I use muscles and it's not all that bad with Collinite. No pollution and good for your bod!

i have used aqua buff 2000 and aqua buff 1000 for yrs (cms resins ) and have had great results i fined it a better than any 3m products but 3m does do a good job but have found aqua buff far better and more cost effective as well

Cheapo carbuba wax. I had a summer job polishing/waxing cars, boats, and planes up in Washington state. Whatever the wax the stuff lasted ~6 months, and I felt better about having the carnuba dust fall into the water rather than something more toxic.

I used the 3m polishing compound with great results if you need to remove oxidation with a buffer. But for the waxes I never went down the 3m road either.

+1 for carbuba, only I spell it carnauba.

I like the Collinite 920 Cleaner. If the hull isn't too bad, it's a lot easier to use than compound. The Collinite paste wax gets high marks, but I find it too hard to use, I like the Collinite liquid wax.

I’m with DotDun on using the Collinite 920 cleaner to remove any hazing.
Then I use the Collinite 925 Wax which works well and stays on the whole season.

+1 for Collinite. I've tried most waxes, and find Collinite lasts the longest.

Collinite's Heavy Duty Fleet Wax #885 is GREAT! Compounded, Buffed and Waxed one of our hulls last March and it still beads...did the other this past winter and it looks great too...these are both circa 1985 boats...
