Cockpit Drains that 'Gloink'

Hi everyone. Having troubles with cockpit drains that exit just above the waterline. Whenever a large wave slaps against the side or the boat is heeled slightly the water slaps and echoes up the pipe with a gloink. Thought about an s bend but was worried about stagnant water. Any thoughts on stopping the gloink?
Thanks in advance.
Coachbolt.

Re: Cockpit Drains that 'Gloink'

An S bend may cause the trapped water to shoot up.
I wonder if a thru-hull cap with a rubber flapper would help.

I like the idea of a rubber flapper or if you can, put a loop in the line so it retains just enough standing water in there to stop transference of the noise.

My sink drain goes: "glurgle...slurgle...slurp slurp schloopa pop" when sailing along on a decent heel.

Re: Cockpit Drains that 'Gloink'

I've enough of Pavlov's dog in my sailing background to associate the "gloink" with making great speed on a good day. I'm afraid I'd miss it if I blocked it!

Re: Cockpit Drains that 'Gloink'

I have always enjoyed the little noises boats make. Little gurgles, shlups, goinks are cute. Right now I have to listen to floor squeaks, groans and squawks from giant sized people walking around the apartment above; along with jet roar of bad plumbing of the water supply lines going to all the other apartments.

I can't wait to be back on the water with the cute noises again.

It's a really annoying sound that echoes up the pipe. I love all the sounds but this one really intrudes on the joy. Another alternative I have considered but I want to look at other ideas first is to reposition the outlet higher above the waterline. It's a steel boat.
Cheers. Coachbolt.

The cockpit drains are ok. It's just the noise.

Re: Cockpit Drains that 'Gloink'

Shucks, that is hardly a problem. When I am on the starboard tack, if I leave my grey water pump energized it will come on and stay on till I am on the port tack. the noise of the pump running dry is horrible... I have to leave the helm and run below and shut it down. A litle gurrgling would be fine.

Re: Cockpit Drains that 'Gloink'

I've heard that gloink before. I suspect that the pipe is resonating at just the right frequency that it's becoming a wave organ.

Seems there ought to be a way to change the gloink into a chuffe, or some less bothersome noise.

Re: Cockpit Drains that 'Gloink'

Put an appropriately aimed cover over the offending drain... like the little stainless covers.... lets water out and stops the glongk!

Re: Cockpit Drains that 'Gloink'

If you're on a long enough night passage, those sounds become different things.
On one passage, the gurgle in our previous boat's cockpit drains became the Mormon Tabernacle Choir!
