Cockpit Cushion Foam

I've searched the forum and I have not found it. Lots of data on interior cushion projects only.

What specification would you recommend for the foam for home-made cockpit cushions?

We have had beautiful cushions custom made, but they are at the end of their useful life, and are too large to move and store anyway. We found a destroyed cushion from the charter trade - the blue ones with two 16" x 16" cushions sewn together so they can make both back and butt cushion, and we used sunbrella and some of the closed cell foam to remake the cushion only 1" thick for both cushions, and love the comfort, stowability, portability, etc.

So, now we have the sunbrella on order, and need the specification for a similar foam, to make enough of these to fill the cockpit. Any suggestions or opinions?

Re: Cockpit Cushion Foam

We made our cockpit cushions using closed cell foam and Nu-foam. Rather than rehash it, read our blog article on how we did it.

They are still looking good after 6 years.

Great Job Bill they look terrific and comfortable.

Any kind of decent foam is not available where we are so just making due till we get to a country like NZ where we can buy good foam.

Re: Cockpit Cushion Foam

My wife used a 3" thick quick-dry type of foam for our cockpit cushions (Sunbrella tops and sides, a breathable mesh on the underside). I don't know the brandname, but she got it from Genco here in Toronto. After 3 years, they are still "fresh", clean and comfortable.

Re: Cockpit Cushion Foam

I had cockpit cushions made for my Oceanis 46 in Sicily. I opted for sunbrella covers and sides, a mesh bottom, 40mm airgomma closed cell and 20mm Dry-fly very open cell. Very comfortable and could not be more happy with the result...

Re: Cockpit Cushion Foam

Outside, I use eva foam. This is better than regular foam as it does not absorb rainwater. The downside is it does not breathe as well as open cell foam.

Re: Cockpit Cushion Foam

We had closed-cell foam for outdoor cushions for a long time. We recently switched to a large-pore open cell foam, FreeFlow Foam in the local market and have no regrets. We find it more comfortable for seating than the closed-cell foam and it dries in a flash if it gets wet.

Re: Cockpit Cushion Foam

I believe the technical term is reticulated foam if this helps you in your searches (bottom one).
