Greg, great ideas, thank you, and thanks for looking and confirming I was not missing the blindingly obvious. StuJackson might yet come through with some links to save the day, but at the moment I think it is safe to assume there's no easy replacement.

Interested that you preferred 12V to battery operated. Any particular reason, aside from the need to replace the battery on the clock from time to time?

Philosphically, I try to minimize maintenance requirements - there's already too many things needing doing - and I dislike throwing away batteries. Although to be fair my saloon clock has a battery movement; I use an Eneloop low self-discharge NiMH battery so at least I am not tossing out alkalines.

Also, I suspect that the VDO movement is a bit better quality, but that is not a certainty. Many of the expensive-looking brass "chronometers" actually contain the same inexpensive AA-powered movement you can buy on eBay for a couple of dollars. Looking there it appears that you might have the best selection of shaft sizes with the Takane brand, for about $10. Again, I think the best bet for fit is with the VDO, but at 4-5 times the price it may not be worth it.

When my Schatz needed repair I just brought it to a clock shop. When they told me the mechanical movement was garbage they replaced the internals for $60 with a small quarts movement. Keeps perfect time and I don't have to wind it.

Did lose the ships's bell function. :-(

It was indeed a Google search. I had an idea after searching for a fix for the very old clock that was passed down.
