I will be changing name of my vessel. The old name was put on via vinyl letters. My question: what is the best way to take off all vinyl name?
thanks, bb

Re: CHANGING NAME OF VESSEL
A heat gun may work... loosening up the adheseve and peeling off the letters. Then you will have to repaint the transom because of the sun decoloration due to fading of the original paint.

Should come off easily with just warming lightly with a heat gun or hair dryer and a scraper if neccassary.
To remove the marks left completely try using 'T' Cut, or a polishing Compound.
Good Luck

Re: CHANGING NAME OF VESSEL
I removed the lettering on my boat using a heat gun and patience. I used Prism polish to restore the color........LL

Re: Changing Vessel Name
I have a source for pre-pubescent, virginal pee, when you get around to re-naming the old gal.

Re: Changing Vessel Name
Search on manatee milk for the real deal. Why risk your vessel on "virginal" pee. How ya gonna check?
Also, I've had a little tiny job cost several hundred bucks using a heat gun. I now use a hair dryer.

Re: Changing Vessel Name
Hot water works, without all the smoke and blistering that a heat gun can cause.LOL

I used a hairdryer and plastic scraper. Had trouble with the white 1/4" border. Broke off in tiny pieces. Just takes patience. Cleaned the residue with Simple Green. Then polished with 3m Finesse-it II and Mcquires antiswirl. Came out nice, but still some ghosting. Didn't want to burn through the paint.

You can buy plastic razor blades (Google the phrase "plastic razor blade"). Do not use a heat gun (too hot for paint and FRP) use a hair drier or hot water. If the vinyl is really tough use 3M Woodgrain and Stripe Remover followed by 3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover. Works great. You should be able to buy those in a well stocked auto supply store especially one that sells paints and finish materials to the auto repair trade.

Re: Changing Vessel Name
I did this over the summer for my hailing port. I just used the plastic scraper and some goo gone. There's some minor discoloration from sunlight, but otherwise it looks fine.

The correct process for changing the name of a vessel is as follows:
1: Get up at 3.00am
2: Face the East
3: Slaughter a white chicken
4: Tell the great grand bunny in the sky the name you want to use
5: Change the vinyl.
Steps 1 thru 4 May be skipped but it is not advisable to do so.
