changing the draft on a sail boat

I was wondering if a draft on a boat could be changed ?? I am looking at a boat that is 65' long and has a draft of 7'6". My question is can it be changed to a draft of 5' and at a reasonable cost ? The boat is a 1999.
Also can the existing keel be modified to a wing .

A number of C&Cs have had keels shortened and torpedeos added. Cheap - no. Possible yes. SWAG - 10k

It is probably up to the specific design. Get the drawings and visit a naval designer.

If the original designer is still around, you may ask them up first.

Definitely direct your questions to a naval architect, preferably one who has lots of experience with the type boat you are purchasing.

Go to Mars Metal or Mars keels. They do this all the time.

Re: changing the draft on a sail boat

There is always another side to changing something on a boat, in this case it would be reduced righting moment or increased displacement if a bulb or a wing is added to the bottom of a shortened keel. Perhaps even more wetted surface area? Or perhaps more torsion where the keel mounts? Rarely do you get something for nothing when modifying a boat.

Losing 1/3 of your draft probably isn't possible without seriously compromising your sailing ability and resale value., But I bet you could get the draft down to 6'6" using the Mars Metals folks.

As mentioned several times, talk to an NA.
