I almost got a year from Comex. Very disapointing. But, If I recall it only cost $100 something per gal. So you factor that into a $1000 haulout at Shelter Bay and a $800 savings in paint, it's a wash.

Eventually you've got to make a choice between sailing and brightwork -- as they are both best done in the same weather. All other things being equal, varnish probably looks 15 percent better for 50 percent more work.

After Cetol, Teaqua, and Teakguard, I'm now using Starbright Tropical Teak Oil/Sealer Natural Light. I applied three coats to the rub rails and have two on the handrails and eye brows. Lovely color and the grain is present which I really like as the teak still acts like non skid. I'll never coat my teak with a shiny surface via either varnish or cetol or anything like that. After years and 8-9 coats of Cetol it looked so dark the teak was nearly invisible and what a pain to remove. Each to his own said the man as he kissed the cow.

Just got rid of all the exterior brightwork and coated the wood with Starbright Tropical Teak Oil Sealer.

Not going back to varnish.
