I almost got a year from Comex. Very disapointing. But, If I recall it only cost $100 something per gal. So you factor that into a $1000 haulout at Shelter Bay and a $800 savings in paint, it's a wash.

Re: Cetol vs varnish

Cetol is to varnish as vinyl is to leather, almost as authentic as a redhead with grey roots. Cetol is a Tayana 48 pretending to be an Oyster 48.5, a Martin guitar built of plywood, or a Rolex on sale in Hong Kong for $150.

Cetol outlasts varnish the same way a toupee outlasts a haircut. It shines like a nickel, smells like dentures, and has all the charm of drinking Australian "burgundy" out of plastic cups.

Cetol is Lance Armstrong claiming he never touched steroids, Donald Trump starring in reality TV, and Larry Ellison promising that AC 72s can be raced safely in 30 knots. If Kim Kardasian ever sings you a love song, it will be sponsored by Cetol.

Otherwise, it's a great product.

Couldn't agree more.

Re: Cetol vs varnish

Eventually you've got to make a choice between sailing and brightwork -- as they are both best done in the same weather. All other things being equal, varnish probably looks 15 percent better for 50 percent more work.

Life is a tradeoff.

Here lies dear old Bash,
He always worked hard
But he never had cash
His sailboat was
A lousy old Hunter
But he varnished it bristol
And it never went under.

"Life's a tradeoff"
He was often told
But he'd wink, and he'd nod
And he'd carry on bold.
"The'll never catch me,
With Cetol on my teak"
he added with a grin,
"'cause I'm not that weak."

The only thing I would use varnish on would be a Rocna.

Clever. Glad to be of inspiration.

After Cetol, Teaqua, and Teakguard, I'm now using Starbright Tropical Teak Oil/Sealer Natural Light. I applied three coats to the rub rails and have two on the handrails and eye brows. Lovely color and the grain is present which I really like as the teak still acts like non skid. I'll never coat my teak with a shiny surface via either varnish or cetol or anything like that. After years and 8-9 coats of Cetol it looked so dark the teak was nearly invisible and what a pain to remove. Each to his own said the man as he kissed the cow.

Re: Cetol vs varnish

Just got rid of all the exterior brightwork and coated the wood with Starbright Tropical Teak Oil Sealer.

Not going back to varnish.
