Centerboard Winch

I have a centerboard in my Bristol 35 but no winch. I am looking for ideas on where to find either a centerboard winch or a winch that could be a centerboard winch.

Once I have a way to raise the thing then I will see if I can make it lower from the trunk.

My swing keel uses a regular sail winch tailed with 9/16" sheet rope (StaysetX)..It weighs in right at 1000 lbs.seems to me you could rig much the same with a block or two if needed depending on mounting configuration.

How do you lower the keel? Are you just relying on wraps on the winch to keep it from dropping in free fall?

A standard two speed boat trailer winch will do the job.

I've got a winch from this company for a boat lift.

They sell a "brake winch" that cranks up and down and holds the position where you stop.

Placement could be an issue, unless I want to reroute the cable. Right now the place the winch is supposed to go is in the starboard cockpit locker.

I will look into the suggestions.

I don't have any good pictures ..but I have a 1" SS tube with several slight bends and one actual 90 degree bend at the winch..this tube extends from the winch at cabin top all the way thru the keel..the lne is inside this tube..I'm sure you could devise a similar method to your trunk top...Our tube forms a nice hand hold ascending the companionway ladder.
