Question CE classification - "areas"

searching for new hatches see @ producers' pages
"CE classified A III" (VETUS) or
"category A area I" (GEBO)
or "Zone II, III, IV"

I know what are A,B,C,D design categories - but what do these "area"s
& roman numbers mean ?

The Roman numerals may refer to the material (ie: 3 = Aluminum)

don't think so
these are some parts of the boat (e.g. zone I = hull, zone II = deck etc.)
I've heard something abt this, but cannot find exact description

and need it - to certify (at least try) our new boat - should describe all
parts in accordance with EC bureaucratic (f-word ) rules

The areas are references to the "protectedness" of the installation.
Rule-of-thumb: Area I is basically for installation above the waterline: hatches must have frames for the glazing, and there are all sorts of rules governing fastening/sealing/dimensions.
Area II is for areas above the sheerline or a certain distance above the waterline. Coachroof, if you like, while Areas III and IV are for protected installation.
Just go for Area I if you can: Area II if you have to.
Good luck, and may your outside water always be outside water; may leaking hatches be someone else's!
