Catalina 30 Sliding Hatch?

I just got a Catalina 30. The main hatch slides
back into a turtle (?). It slides with much
difficulty.

Anybody know how to lubricate it or something
to make it slide easier?

Re: Catalina 30 Sliding Hatch?

I had the same problem on my Morgan. My hatch was difficult to open, and made a loud squeal when it did slide open.

I measured the length and width of the track that the hatch slides on. Then I went to home depot and bought one long piece of white vinyl siding. Cost me about $8. Cut two pieces from it to fit the tracks and used 4200 to secure it in place.Worked great, and the silence is golden.

With your hatch in the open position, make sure to lift it enough to measure back into the concealed area. You want to get that piece of vinyl as far back as it will go

Hope that helps

Re: Catalina 30 Sliding Hatch?

The gel trends to wear and make it harder to slide. Quick fix may be clean it real well and some spray lube. The vinyl strip or some UHMW tape would be a longer term fix. UHMW tape is available from any decent woodworking supply and it's fantastic stuff.

Also if you have a dodger, it may be hanging up on it. That's what mine does.

Or even the Silver lube works well there! just a dab or two ! too much is worse !! not for hard opening but for the mess every where!!

Re: Catalina 30 Sliding Hatch?

I'd rather not lube it as that would
attract dirt.

Re: Catalina 30 Sliding Hatch?

I've had a Cat 30 for 25 years with the same issue. Tried different lubes but in the end I just got used to giving it a tug and moved on.

The strips sound like a great fix, although you would have to take the turtle off to install them.

Re: Catalina 30 Sliding Hatch?

I tried cutting strips from a waterproof wallboard that
looked like it would be slick. It actually was very
sticky. Didn't work at all.

So, I put a light lube on it and it works better, but
not much.

McLube. Or the self-stick UHMW strips.

Re: Catalina 30 Sliding Hatch?

Our Catalina 30 had the same problem. The yahoo group recommended these strip that woodworker folks put on saw fences. Not sure if that's the same as UHMW but it worked a charm and they're super slick.
