Canadian boatbuilder -- aluminum?

It's a ways off, because I'm a ways off, but plan is to sail home next year. I am in the process of planning my next project -- having an aluminum yacht built one-off.

Plan is to have the hull and deck built, and boat completed to whatever stage we can afford, and finish it off myself. There are a lot of great yards in Australia, NZ, Europe and the US, but my wife wants to be close to home while I get dirty, so the Canadian West Coast is home. Vancouver Island is best, but the lower mainland is fine if the builder is right.

I have narrowed it down to a few designs (36-38', 7.5-8 tons).

Does anyone know of a good aluminum builder who can build such a boat? I would like to find someone with whom I can now discuss the cost of building each design and the various modifications that I require..

cheers and thanks

jimbim,

Have you checked out origamimagic.com? You may want to touch base with Brent (Louis Riel on this forum) - he builds out there. Good luck and fair winds. Keep us posted on your progress.

The Metal boat society could well be worth looking at.

Ive got a custom built 42 ft alloy boat and have found the info on the site invaluable. They have a free trial membership that lasts for 3 months (I think) Ask on their forum and Im sure you'll be inundated with useful info. They seem to be based in North America somewhere

Give em a try.

Thanks for the replies. I will check out the Metal Boat Society.

Only builder that I was able to find was Christensen Yachts <http://www.christensenyachts.ca>, but I recently went back to their page to write them and was met with an announcement that they are closing shop. No reason given, so don't know whether to be happy for them or sad.

Thanks DeepFrz (you must be from Winnipeg), I'll check it out. Wolf Boats doesn't seem to do one-offs, but maybe I will email them and just ask who does. If they are in the business they have to know. cheers
