Can You Identify This Starter?

I was hanging upside down yesterday trying to figure out the brand of stater that is currently on my 1984 Perkins 4.108 lowline. The builders plate has ben painted over, the solenoid appears to be a Lucas.

Considering the motor came out of a French built Beneteau that would probably make sense. My mechanic charged me an arm and two legs to have it rebuilt in the states, ($500.00). Is there a reason this might have been so costly or did I get ripped off?

You got ripped off.You can get a rebuilt one on ebay for $120. Dont be afraid to do this one on your own, the most common problems are sticky starter drive that can usually be fixed with some penetrating oil followed by lubricating oil till the ratchet mechanism is working freely. Another common problem is corrosion and wear from arcing inside the solenoid cap where the copper bolts ride on the contact ring. Often a little sandpaper takes care of it sometimes rotating the ring and replacing the copper bolt is necessary <$5. When you have it apart good time to lightly polish the brush contact surface and daba little grease in the bushed ends. Be careful when reassembling the armature/rotor to not damage the brush holders. These starters last a looong time and usually are rebuilt or replaced when just insignificant problems could have been easily fixed.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you got royally ripped off. A complete rebuild of the original should have been $200 max ($150 if shopped around). About $125-$150 would net a Delco-remy drop in replacement. And $300-$350 for a gear reduction drive that would suck up less juice.

I kind of figured rip off but at the time I was so overwlmed with issues that I didn't press him. The problem is that this is the guy I paid to rebuild the motor, hope all those nice new parts went were they were supposed to go and not out the back door of the shop.

ps hate the gear reduction starters. They turn way slow and in cold weather it can take a lot of cranking to fire. Also less serviceable in out of the way places as they have some press fit parts that are a bear to work on.
