Here's my dodger on my 1974 Pearson 30. Does a great job of protection from rain, sun, and wind so the main hatch can always stay open. However, it interferes with the primary winches...so I use the secondary winches all the time, not a big deal. Also, its tight to get past when going forward or coming back to the cockpit...its just too wide for the boat. Forward window rolls/unrolls for ventilation. Strong frame, good for holding on. Overall, very good.

Thanks for sharing your photos. Very well done. We live here in the Bay Area and are preparing for our own Mexico adventure in a couple of years. Your video makes me want to leave now! A winter in Mexico sounds pretty good right about now.

Dodger designs should ALL include side handrails. It's a safety issue.

I've often noted, in our review of some of the newer boats offered by our local dealer, Farallone Yachts, that the side handrails are offered as an "option" for their "ocean package." I mentioned to them at a recent boat show that SF Bay can oftentimes be wilder than the ocean, especially during the summer! They just don't get it, and new boat owners and new dodger owners oughta insist on the side rails. Good Old Boat magazine did a great writeup on how to add them if you have to.

John, Thank you for that video! That's a great video of cruising (on a great little boat,) and really fun to watch. We should have a thread of "some great little cruising videos" for all those dreaming of cruising. And you really helped me see how the dodger can work on my boat (not many of the 29s around! I think they are all in foreign ports.)

Guys, as a price check, regarding hard dodgers, as well as some "thinks" on desigining & building such... You can get 1/2" core material for $2/sqft, glass for $2-5/lb depending on the type, carbon fiber for $10-20/lb, & epoxy resin for $5lb+/-
It just takes a bit of digging online is all.

Ditto on finding the various, conventional, & unconventional techniques which guys use to build things. Again, it's an asking thing, as well as reading (especially periodicals), & looking online. Plus, when you see something intriguing, with the right approacth, usually a phone call to the builder to talk about their beautiful project is a gold mine. Not always, but often enough, that it's worth giving it a shot a few times.

I used 40 gauge O'Sea window material from Sailrite

2. How long have you had the phifertex covers?
Just a couple of months. So far I like them. They allow me to see out a bit and hopefully will provide some protection.

3. Have you had any issues with scratches on the window material from the phifertex?
No . It has a pretty smooth finish and because of the texture of the weave it sits lightly on the surface of the windows. I use twist snaps to hold the covers in place so they don't move around. So far I'm happy with the decision.

Loved your video. I really wanted to go to Mexico but my wife claims that it is just too hot for her. Is it really that bad in winter time?
Anyway, I settled for a round trip to Hawaii, instead.
