Can I run freezer on the hard?

I need to haul out in a few days and need to know if it's safe to run an isotherm freezer with seawater thru-hull exchanger while on the hard. Bad idea?

Yes, if it is water cooled, it needs cooling, maybe connect it to your drinking water tank if it is a large one and cool it that way?

I think it's a bad idea unless you are going to hook up a hose outside to run water over the cooler

Water only, or air and water? If no air, no, you can't.

With a plug-in and (therefore assumed) endless power, air could do it. Our water cooling clogs up pretty regularly (change/clean filter, ream out intake areas and hoses), so there are some places we don't bother with the water assist - air only cooling costs more amps but with no attention needed...

Re: Can I run freezer on the hard?

I just saw a photo the other day of how some acquaintences solved the same delima.

They held a 5 gallon bucket filled with water against the hull with a jack stand while living onboard on the hard. [I'm guessing one may have to put some foam gasgeting on the rim of the bucket if the hull deadrise is too acute.]

They said it worked great for them.

FWIW

Cheers! Bill

Re: Can I run freezer on the hard?

For years I have used a 6 gallon water jug inside the boat to eliminate saltwater entirely from the system so easy to do because the refrigeration unit is sufficiently efficient so that when it runs not that much heat gets into the water and you have a long time for the water to cool down before the unit turns on again

Water cooling ?

Works when you are in the water , forget about it when you are out , unless you have an innovative idea to get water to the condenser. Some folks have got it figured out .

Re: Can I run freezer on the hard?

It's actually stupidly easy you just take the pick up to the water pump put it in the bottom of the jug and you take the output of the condenser and put it to drain into the top of the jug and you're on

Re: Can I run freezer on the hard?

A Water cooled condenser is far more efficient than an air cooled especially in hot climates plus you dont reject all that heat into the already hot living area of the boat.

I routed a 6m copper coil into the composite hull of my cat and have a treated closed circuit fresh water condenser cooling system with a small circ pump that comes on when my frig or freezer compressor cuts in. the system is in series and both compressors are standard Danfoss BD50s with the water cooled condenser.

My boat was stored at the Gold Coast last summer and i was on board on the hard through the heatwave doing small jobs and the frig and freezer both worked well in 40 degree outside temperature. Easy to do on a new build harder to retrofit but not impossible depending on layout.
