Can Anyone Tell me the Technical Name for This Weird Nut N Bolt Thingy
What im after trying to buy, is a type or nut and bolt thingy where i have a small counter sunk machine screw going into a internal threaded counter sunk cylinder.
I'm not sure if there a security fitting of maybe from cabinet makers etc.
Please see the attached picture to help you get what i talking about.
I want to buy some so that i can use them on my acrylic to bolt things to without have any protrusion.
If you know what there actually called i would send you many thanks as i have asked some bolt suppliers and they didn't have a clue
Thanks in advance,
Matthew

Two different options:
1. Binding Posts (also called Barrel Nuts) - McMaster Binding Posts
2. Tee Nuts - McMaster - Tee Nuts
The Tee Nuts aren't quite what you pictured, but they can serve the same purpose depending on how you want to install things.
Finding the flathead version might be a challenge, but now you know the names.

And then I realized you were on the opposite side of the planet, where things are frequently called differently

It's not just the opposite side of the planet down here, in many ways it is a different universe.
Coops.

Re: Can Anyone Tell me the Technical Name for This Weird Nut N Bolt Thingy
Thanks everyone, i have enough information to get dangerous now, haha
i found out these things can be called barrel nuts or sex bolts.
You can just imagine what google brings up when you search for those types of things.
I was almost shocked.
Dsanduril, thanks for that link mate, i can give em a call tomorrow to see if they have the sizes that im after.
Thanks everyone else too.

Re: Can Anyone Tell me the Technical Name for This Weird Nut N Bolt Thingy
Once sent an e-mail to a female colleague in Brisbane, told her "I found what I needed by rooting around on the internet." Learned my lesson
Have fun with the project.
For anyone else that is ever looking: Binding Posts, Barrel Nuts, Chicago Bolts/Screws/Nuts, Sex Nuts, Book Screws, Architectural Bolts...
How can one little thingy have so many names?

Isn't a "sex bolt" the rapid departure you make when your wife catches you in bed with her sister.

If access to the backside is an issue or if it is a panel and you are worried the "nut" may fall off (for the hammered in nuts) a rivnut is a great option.
It is installed permanently and blind.
They also have flush mount either thin head, counterbore or countersunk.

Throw in a few binding posts and this could get interesting

Re: Can Anyone Tell me the Technical Name for This Weird Nut N Bolt Thingy
Excal is right about the rivnut being a great option for a self-holding installation:
Anzor have rivnuts in stainless, both 'rimless' (with a small conical flange to go into shallow countersink) and "flanged" to go into a counterbore.
Another option for special fasteners is Misumi USA, if it's something you can't get locally.
Or just find a small machine shop to make exactly what you want. (Even rivnuts are not difficult to make if you need special dimensions or materials)

Re: Can Anyone Tell me the Technical Name for This Weird Nut N Bolt Thingy
Sorry in advance for thread drift but on a related topic...
My cockpit floor hatch covers the batteries, saildrive dipstick and seawater cock and is held down with 18 screws which really discourages frequent maintenance.
In the aviation world there are 1/4 turn fasteners - an example called z-loc is attached. The spring is riveted on the backside. The screw can be held captive on the panel by installing a lock ring in the groove under the head - nice for not losing the screws.
I am contemplating putting these in - has anyone seen this type of thing for boats?
Not that the purpose matters..
