Can anyone identify this tool?

I think that it is used to loosen the output flange nut on the gearbox. I also think that those bolts can be threaded into the opposite corners to tighten the output flange nut. The output shaft seals were probably changed at some point. I am pretty sure I have guessed correctly. Do I win a prize?

I too had come to the conclusion that this device ws to loosen, and perhaps, if the bolts can be reversed, tighten a nut/bolt with limited axial space for the usual tools. Was thinking either end of the transmission or engine. Definitely agree with Brewgyver and Thumbs Up. Since Thumbs Up is the most specific, if he is correct, I'd say he's the winner!

Somebody (PO) went through a lot of expense to come up with that tool/jig. If I had a new-to-me boat and found something like that, I'd also ask around, but I would never just toss something like that.
Even if you don't get a good answer, put some anti-corrosion on it, seal it up in some plastic bags, and store it in some dry spot in your bilges.
Go out and test/have fun with your new boat. At some point when you are trying to repair something, probably on the engine or drive train, the use of that custom tool will become obvious.
Further, it might be the cause of the end of the entire known universe if you toss that tool. For your sake, and ours, hold on to it.
Besides, metal spares in the bilge help stiffen your boat.

Its a replica. They used this tool in the 18th & 19th century to punish crew that misbehaved. In that tome the victim had to put 2 fingers on it and one of his mates was ordered to turn the (now) socket to break the 2 fingers.

I'm pretty certain it is part of a Morse engine control. The splined side probably was where the control handle mounted and the square side had a circular part that the control cable wrapped around. It looks a lot like the one that came with my Sabb diesel engine.

I like that. Maybe the two bolts in the long axis are adjustable throw stops (high/low).

My suggestions. 1) It can be used to occupy idle minds such as visiting children or older smart a____s or 2) it may be one of those weird marriage aid tools. Finally, it may be a way of securing the whereabouts of the owners half inch drive socket.
Might I suggest that the owner contacts the previous boat owner. It might be important. It looks fairly serious to me. Enjoy Easter.

my vote is for a home made tubing bender-- you back off the bolt and insert the tube, then tighten down bolt snugly-- take a 1/2 inch drive and apply torque- just a WAG

It's a tool someone's made to tighten or loosen a nut that has limited access. It appears the cap screws can be threaded into either side for tightening or loosening operations. There may also be some kind of key to hold the tool itself from turning, or it may be placed on temporary studs screwed into the flange of the machine being worked on.


I think the nut securing the output flange on the transmission might be a good candidate...


That's my guess anyway.
