Butyl tape here in Australia???

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me if they know of a supplier for 3M butyl tape here in Oz? Alternatively I'd buy some in the US if they could ship here at a reasonable price. 3M here in Australia doesn't seem to sell it.

Thanks

Try recreational vehicle shops (Motorhomes & Trailers). They use it to bed windows & skylights etc.

Re: Butyl tape here in Australia???

I don't think either of those are the tape that the OP is looking for.

I think he wants the stuff that looks like blue-tack but much stickier.
I, and many other cruisers, use it to seal deck hardware. Mine is light gray.

I bought some very cheaply in Costco USA, but had a very hard time locating the same stuff in AU.
Plumbers used to use it under basins and sinks, but when I went to Bunnings, they just looked at me with a blank face.....

I also bought mine from tapesonline. It was the only place i could find. It is very sticky and works very well. Use to bed just about everything now. Wish i had known about it 30 years ago.

Re: Butyl tape here in Australia???

Any car parts store should have it since it is used to seal windows in cars. Alternatively ask your local garage or a car window repair shop.

By the way, Sika 710 sealant is butyl as well. Sika added some fast evaporating thinner that allows the butyl to be squeezed from the tube. After 20 minutes it returns to the same consistency as butyl tape, or faster of you knead it before use. The Butyl sealant is easier to handle IMHO since it allows you to squeeze any shape from the tube.

Thanks for that, I've been looking for something to rebed my windows and this seems like a better choice, love the tape for hardware

BTW Sika isn't the only brand that has butyl in a tube. I currently use Sika 710 because my local store carries it, but I have been using other brands as well.

Re: Butyl tape here in Australia???

Butyl tape is used to seal the glass in place in just about every hi-rise built in the last 30 years, and is contractually required to offer at least a 10 yr warranty. It can be had from commercial glass shops with a 1/8" vinyl bead integrated into the butyl. Acts like a continuous O-ring. Deck fitting on Bluestocking have been there since '94 with no leaks. I owned a commercial glass company and have used miles of the stuff.

I bought mine from Maine Sail in the US. Postage wasn't outrageous.
