Broken Wheel Locking Pin - Help Please
Hello,
I'm on a mooring ball in Lahaina Maui. I took a beating yesterday from some swells and my wheel was spinning both ways fast and hard.
The pin that is on the bolt sticking out of my binnacle is missing its locking part.
Do I need to replace the whole bolt part or is there something that I can buy to slide in there.
Here are two images uploaded to photobucket:

Thanks in advance for your help. Want to move down the coast but staying till get this fixed.

Re: Broken Wheel Locking pin - Help please
That locking key should be an easy to match standard size, but before you attempt replacing it; did you search the cockpit,- maybe under the grating? Was the nut on the wheel loose and providing enough space for the locking spline to work it's way out? If the gaps for the missing piece are not worn, and they don't appear worn from the photos, then all you need to do is replace the locking piece.

Re: Broken Wheel Locking pin - Help please
Searched the cockpit and it seems to be gone. I will replace. Thanks soooo much for the info.
Should I have locked the wheel / rudder in place while being tossed around so much or just let the wheel / rudder do its thing?

It's best, in my opinion, not to put a shock load on the steering system having it slam at it's endpoints. It's also best the have the pressures on the rudder relieved with some movement. I would suggest strong "bungies" or snubbers fixed at the outside of the wheel to a strong point or two in the cockpit. I've seen opposite sides of the wheel lashed to the sheet winches with those large black rubber snubbers on lines.

You should be able to get keystock in Brass or stainless to fix your problem. Looks like 3/16 or 1/4 in. You don't want standard steel stock or it will become a rusty mess. Any shipyard or marine store should have it.

If you can't find it in a hardware store try a marine machine shop. They will have key stock on hand for sure.
I would go with bronze if you plan on cutting it to fit.

Rather then put bungees on the wheel, IMHO I'd put them on the quadrant to slowdown backlash in the whole system. Locking the wheel in place just transfers the shock to the cables/pulleys or whatever drives your rudder. One of the reasons I went to hydraulic steering, no backlash.

Re: Broken Wheel Locking pin - Help please
You are looking for bronze or stainless keystock, which is square stock with slightly rounded corners which should just fit in the slot in the wheel and shaft.
Try calling Valley Isle Marine 808-242-6868 in Wailuku
In Lahaina, you may have to settle for steel--try the hardware stores and the automotive machine shops--take the wheel with you to make sure you get the right size. Put it in with lots of grease to keep the water out, and plan on replacing it when you get somewhere with more resources. You may have to file it slightly to make it fit.
Next time lash the wheel to keep it from turning.

You plan sounds good,- "off the quadrants". I've had hydraulic steering for the last 27 years so I was just taking my best guess and not by my own application.

Actually it's the straight shaft and it's the key next to the threads. But they are the same.

Or is he missing item #2 in the drawing above? From his description that is what it sounds like.

If the nut was in place, how did the key come out.
